Joe Anderson: 2018 events ‘will knock 2008 into a cocked hat’

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson says the celebrations to mark a decade since Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year will “knock 2008 into a cocked hat”.

High-profile events already announced for 2018 include the return of Royal de Luxe’s Giants and a visit by the world famous Terracotta Warriors.

Culture Liverpool, the team behind the 2008 celebrations, has told the public to expect a “kaleidoscope of art, music, theatre, technology, style and sport” next year.

Some of the highlights already revealed for 2018 include:

  • One “global action” sports event
  • Six “incredible” music moments
  • Four live broadcast events of “national significance”
  • One “huge” maritime celebration
  • A football parade
  • Liverpool Biennial at 20
  • Royal De Luxe Giant spectacular

The full Liverpool 2018 programme is set to be unveiled next Tuesday (7 November) at the World Travel Market event in London.

Mayor Anderson was speaking at the Everyman yesterday (30 October) during the launch of the Liverpool Brand Anatomy report.

The report is the result of a project undertaken by the Heseltine Institute for Marketing Liverpool and was designed to promote discussion over whether Liverpool is being presented to the world in the right way.

Mayor Anderson added: “Celebrations like what we have lined up for next year sell our city to the world so we need culture, not just in an event way like in 2018, but every single year.

“It’s important to me that we continue to support and to fund culture in Liverpool.”
