August start for Wolstenholme Square construction

An 18-month construction project is due to get underway in Liverpool’s Wolstenholme Square next month now that the main contractor has been named.

Newry Consturction has already worked on schemes by the site’s developer Elliot Group, and is preparing to press ahead with transforming the city centre site.

Following demolition of the square’s previous buildings, including music venue The Kazimier and Cream’s home Nation, three new five to 10-storey mixed-use blocks will be built.

The buildings, designed by architect Falconer Chester Hall, will provide 447 studio and one-bedroom apartments and a new passageway through to Seel Street will be lined by shops, cafes and offices.

Elliot Lawless, director of Elliot Group, says: “Newry Construction have performed time and again for us and were able to demonstrate how they could apply the same methodology to deliver quality and value at Wolstenholme Square.”

Neil Swanson of Landscape Projects has is also among other contractors appointed for the scheme, and will work with international artist Jorge Pardo to refurbish Wolstenholme Square’s famous ‘Penelope’ sculpture, as well as carrying out other landscape works.
