A café, events space and outdoor green area are heading to Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle as part of a new development.
The public facilities will accompany workspace for the digital technology sector as a 19th Century docklands storehouse is transformed.
Baltic Creative Community Interest Company (CIC) is planning to get work underway on the development in November after securing £2.6 million of investment from The Charity Bank and European Regional Development Fund.
The redevelopment of the four-storey 61-65 Norfolk Street address and its adjoining two-storey Simpson Street building is expected to be ready by September 2018.
Baltic Creative CIC acquired the site, which is currently in a state of disrepair, from Liverpool City Council on a 125-year leasehold.
The scheme, which will make way for businesses focusing on technology such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and Internet of Things (IoT), is being designed by K2 Architects.
Kevin Horton, architects director from the practice, says: “We are thrilled to be working with Baltic Creative on the refurbishment of 61-65 Norfolk Street. Our research for the Project has taken us as far afield as Amsterdam, London and even Oslo in our efforts to appreciate the very best this highly competitive sector has to offer its customers. What ourselves and Baltic Creative have planned for 61-65 Norfolk Street is entirely original and will become nothing less than a world leading space for Creative & Digital businesses.
“It’s important to note that, whilst part of the building is structurally unsound with sections in considerable disrepair, it does have notable architectural and aesthetic merit. Therefore we, along with Baltic Creative, are passionate about maintaining the historic fabric of the building and intend to preserve as much of the original construction as is structurally possible.”
The announcement of the 10-month restoration project to breathe new life into the buildings comes as a public consultation on the draft Baltic Development Framework is set to take place today (10 October).
The event, being held at The Pod, 41 Jordan Street from 2-7pm, will enable people to have their say on a draft framework to guide future development in the area, which has become home to a range of workspace, residential properties and leisure attractions.
Liverpool City Council has put together the document to manage conflicts of interest in the district and ensure quality design and development, having received feedback from stakeholders.
