Greenbank student development recommended for approval

Accommodation at Liverpool’s Greenbank Student Village could be increased with the development new halls of residence if plans are given the go-ahead next week.

Liverpool City Council’s planning committee is recommended to approve a proposed development of 1,361 replacement student bedrooms at the Greenbank Lane site, following the demolition of a number of buildings there.

Three new buildings of between four and eight storeys are planned for the site along with the refurbishment of Derby Hall which, although not listed, is recognised for its “local architectural merit”.

The new buildings would follow the demolition of Roscoe Hall, Gladstone Hall, Warden’s Lodge, Warden’s Court, Rathbone Hall, Rathbone House and Derby House; and increase the site’s student accommodation by 379 rooms.

The proposed development would also provide tutor accommodation as well as sports provision including multi-use games areas (MUGAs), pitches, a sports pavilion and two-storey sports block.

Car parking spaces would also increase from 99 to 104 and cycle stands from 80 to 135 if the scheme, which also proposes additional vehicular access off North Mossley Hill Road, is approved during a committee meeting on 28 June.

A council report to be discussed by the committee recommends the scheme is given the green light with conditions, suggesting the application “represents an enhancement of the area and an attraction to the student community to the benefit of the local economy”.
