Liverpool to be fourth UK host of World Artistic Gymnastics Championships

The 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will be held in Liverpool, bringing the competition to the UK for the fourth time.

British Gymnastics, Liverpool City Council and UK Sport joined forces to bid for the tournament, which is one of the largest international sporting events to ever take place in the city.

An estimated 600 gymnasts from 90 countries are expected to compete in the 10-day championships at Echo Arena Liverpool, after the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) unanimously agreed on the location.

The 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships is also estimated to bring an economic boost of around £5.1 million for Liverpool, which has staged the British Gymnastics Championships since 2011.

The city will follow previous UK hosts of the tournament including Birmingham in 1993, London in 2009 and Glasgow in 2015.

British Gymnastics chief executive officer, Jane Allen says: “We are delighted Liverpool has been selected to host the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. What an exciting year it’s going to be with the 2022 Commonwealth Games also taking place on home soil.

“The World Championships should be a qualifying event for the 2024 Olympic Games so expect to see the World’s absolute best at Liverpool 2022 including many international Olympic stars.

“The bid process saw us join forces with Liverpool City Council and the government’s major events agency UK Sport to provide a compelling bid which impressed the FIG. We now all look forward to continuing our work together to provide a fantastic experience for gymnasts and spectators alike.”

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson adds: “It is a huge sporting coup for Liverpool to host the World Gymnastics Championships in 2022 and a unique opportunity to showcase the city to a global audience.

“Liverpool has a fantastic track record in nurturing gymnastic talent, like Beth Tweddle, and we’ve fostered a great relationship with British Gymnastics so the 2022 World Championships will be a great way to celebrate our decade-long journey together and kick-start the countdown to the Paris Olympics.

“With our world class facilities, brilliant partners and unbelievably passionate crowds we look forward to giving the sport of gymnastics a World Championships to remember.”

The 2022 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships will be the 51st edition and will delivered in partnership between British Gymnastics and Liverpool City Council with financial support from The National Lottery through UK Sport.
