New bar planned for listed Castle Street building

Plans to transform a former building society on Castle Street into a new bar have been revealed.

Tony Burns wants to open The Sanctuary Tap next door to his Spanish-themed venue Pinch which he launched in 2015.

Tony, who also formerly owned McGuffie & Co, has submitted a planning application for the new bar, as well as an application to serve alcohol at the Grade II-listed commercial district building.

The Sanctuary Tap at 18 Castle Street would replace the former Furness building society.

According to a document included with the planning application, the aim for 18 Castle Street is to conduct an “overall makeover and re-branding, transforming the venue into ‘The Sanctuary Tap’ – a new destination bar which can attract new custom, along with loyal Castle Street patrons who wish to try something new”.

If approved The Sanctuary Tap would join an ever growing list of venues on Castle Street, which has become something a food and drink hotspot in recent years.
