With the words ‘bowl food’ proudly emblazoned across the far wall of Vincent Asian Kitchen, this Bold Street eatery makes no attempt at hiding what’s on offer.

All of the food is gluten, dairy and wheat free; strange for a restaurant which describes itself as a fast food establishment. But this is fast food with a twist – diners can choose from a selection of Asian-inspired dishes from a set menu or alternatively they can build their own bowl from a choice of seasonal ingredients freshly prepared at the counter.

The vibe is Subway meets Wok and Go meets the Body Coach, and this interpretation of fast food is definitely one that I can get on board with.

While presenting a modern twist there are elements of classic fast food joints throughout the restaurant, such as a self-serve Coca-Cola dispenser and bowls served on plastic trays.

The concept is simple; choose a base and pick a layer of meat, fish or tofu, then decide on a vegetable portion. Follow it with a sauce and garnish to complete the bowl.

Not the creative types, my dining partner and I put faith in the expert chefs and went for set bowls suggested on the menu.

My choice was the Protein Bowl (£8), a dish combining rice noodles, Thai grilled chicken, charred corn, peanut sauce, kimchi pickled vegetables and crushed peanuts.

With flavours reminiscent of satay chicken, I was surprised by how tasty and filling a dish could be without dairy, wheat or gluten.

My dining partner made the better choice of dish, however, with the Hangover Bowl (£8).

This brown rice-based serving comprised pork char sui, spicy beans, mushroom and pak choi stir fry, sprinkled with crispy shallots. All of this was topped off with a perfectly cooked hen’s egg.

I can see where this dish gets its name as it’s exactly the kind of food I’d love to be eating if I had a hangover! The saltiness of the pork was balanced by the sweet shallots and the runny egg yolk combined with the flavours perfectly.

With the option to eat in or takeaway, these flavoursome bowls would be ideal to bring back to the office on your lunch break, or great for a quick bite to eat with friends.

Vincent Asian Kitchen wouldn’t be out of place on a trendy Los Angeles avenue and is certainly a great fit for Bold Street and its eclectic food offering.
