New gastro café, Souk is the latest to join Liverpool’s Bold Street. On a street where you can visit different corners of the world on a plate, it brings a touch of the Mediterranean to this thriving foodie scene.

First impressions count and Souk is a modern, spacious restaurant with an open kitchen where everything is in full view of customers. Instead of flowers, basil plants adorn the tables for you to add extra garnish if you wish.

We were warmly greeted by the restaurant staff and seated by the full length window looking out onto Bold Street, a perfect vantage point for watching the world go by.

To drink, we each ordered a San Pellegrino (£2.20). If you’re after a stronger tipple then I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed as Souk doesn’t have a drinks licence.

While browsing the menu we were given our first taste as bread – freshly made from Souk’s olive wood oven – and hummus (£3.20) were brought over. The homemade bread was delicious, the hummus creamy and the olive and sundried tomato dip, rich with flavour and spice, was the perfect starter to whet our appetites.

The menu features a variety of different influences from across the Mediterranean – there’s Italian (pizzas, pastas), Middle Eastern (hummus, falafel), Greek (koftas) and North African (tagines) to choose from.

Next up, I ordered the garlic prawns (£5.90) which were served whole – worth noting if you don’t like deshelling them yourself. The juicy prawns were full of flavour and the garlic, butter and chilli dressing packed a punch. My dining partner chose the grilled halloumi starter (£5.90) which was fresh and light.

We also shared the strawberry and feta salad (£8.90) which was bursting with sweet, tangy flavours. The sweetness of the strawberries and salty feta, mixed with spinach, red onions and pine nuts, was the perfect combination and proved to be one of my favourite dishes.

For the main, my partner went for the Estiva (£7.90), a creamy chicken pasta dish flavoured with ginger, chilli, fresh mint and tomatoes. The ginger and chilli added a subtle spice to the dish and it was generously sized with big chunks of chicken.

I chose the tagine of the day (£9.50), which on my visit was lamb. The hearty dish was piled high with vegetables, potatoes, couscous and two shanks of lamb. The tender lamb fell off the bone and had all the fragrant flavours you would expect from this North African dish.

We also shared a side of zucchini fries (£3.00) on the restaurant’s recommendation. The courgette matchsticks were deep fried in a crispy tempura batter and tasted light, not greasy.

At this point we were fit to burst. The portions at Souk are very generous, although you can choose between a regular or small portion on much of the menu.

However after some persuading, my dining partner and I finished the meal by sharing a strawberry and cream petit (£2.30). The light, creamy lemon mousse filling was sandwiched by a biscuit base and topped with strawberry jelly. Served with vanilla ice cream, it went down a treat.

Souk brings the sunny flavours of the Mediterranean to Bold Street and with decent prices, friendly staff and great food, it’s well worth a visit.
