Plans have been submitted for a new padel centre i Plans have been submitted for a new padel centre in Speke, featuring six covered courts and a clubhouse pavilion on a currently vacant site adjacent to Dobbies and the SPAR Euro Garage. The development would include changing facilities, showers and a café for players and visitors. Padel has rapidly grown in popularity across Liverpool, with existing facilities elsewhere in Speke, as well as in Aigburth and West Derby, and new courts planned at Brunswick Dock, Wavertree Tennis Centre and Princes Dock.

Woolton Cinema CIC has announced that its recent ' Woolton Cinema CIC has announced that its recent '12 Days of Christmas' campaign raised £60,000, bringing overall fundraising to just under £220,000 - a major milestone in efforts to secure the future of Liverpool’s oldest surviving cinema. Built in 1927, Woolton Picture House is the city’s only remaining single-screen cinema and is the focus of a community-led campaign to raise £700,000 to purchase and restore the building as a community-owned cultural venue. The festive programme saw the South Liverpool landmark reopen for a limited run of fundraising screenings, welcoming 7,300 ticket-holders across 12 days, complete with 1,500 buckets of popcorn, 2,000 interval ice creams - and even a Christmas Eve marriage proposal. A brand-new padel centre with championship-level i A brand-new padel centre with championship-level indoor and outdoor courts has officially opened in Speke. Located on Sterling Road, the facility is @ignitepadeluk's third opening this year, following new sites on Queens Drive in April and at Cheshire Oaks in September. The Speke site, which opened today (Monday 1 December), includes six indoor courts and four outdoor covered courts. The indoor courts are the first of their kind in the city. Lewis Capaldi is set to play a major outdoor show Lewis Capaldi is set to play a major outdoor show in Sefton Park on 15 August next year. The Scottish singer is the first headliner confirmed for 'In the Park 2026', with further acts to be announced in the coming months. The news follows Capaldi’s sold-out 17-date arena tour across the UK and Ireland - his first in two years - which featured new material that has drawn strong critical praise. Presale tickets open at 9am on Thursday 20 November, with general sale beginning at 9am on Friday 21 November.
The campaign to save and restore Woolton Picture H The campaign to save and restore Woolton Picture House - Liverpool's oldest surviving cinema - has taken a huge leap forward thanks to a £100,000 donation from local business Crampton Bros (Coopers) Ltd. The Liverpool-based company has become the first official 'Picture House Founder', a title reserved for major contributors to the 'It Takes a Village to Open a Cinema' campaign, which is working to raise £700,000 by April 2026 to purchase and refurbish the beloved community landmark. Built in 1927, Woolton Picture House is the city's only remaining single-screen cinema. Having been closed since the pandemic, it is now being brought back to life by Kevin Fearon and Gillian Miller, the team behind Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre, who have formed Woolton Cinema CIC - a not-for-profit, community-led organisation dedicated to preserving the building for future generations.

Founded by Steve and Ruth Maranto in 1983 - and now under the care of their daughter Anna and her husband Joe - the restaurant will close in January and reopen on Valentine’s Day with an updated look and new features, including a revived bar area and an upstairs games room. Anna says: “Maranto’s has always been about family and food, and that will never change. It is still the same family, the same recipes and the same welcome, but we are excited to give the building a new lease of life. “The refurb will help us look to the future while keeping hold of everything people love. "The menu will stay true to the Italian-American favourites that customers return for, while the interiors will be refreshed with rich greens, mosaic tiling and those little touches like the Tiffany lamps that have been part of Maranto’s since day one.”

Rising to 19 and 25 storeys, the buildings will occupy the site of the former Littlewoods computer centre at the junction of Old Hall Street and Leeds Street, delivering 434 new homes for the private rented sector.
