A campaign to encourage Liverpool residents to pay tribute to the military has launched ahead of Armed Forces Day.

Today (5 May) marks 50 days until the city serves as national host of the annual event and locals are being asked to take a ‘Salute Our Forces’ selfie as a mark of respect to service personnel.

This involves submitting a photograph of yourself performing a traditional military salute and uploading the picture to the Culture Liverpool website before 15 May.

Group submissions are welcome and all entries could be used in online and billboard marketing campaigns in the run-up to Armed Forces Day on 24 June.

Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for events, Councillor Wendy Simon, says: “This event is all about thanking those ordinary men and woman who dedicate their lives to serving our country.

“We want to build anticipation ahead of June’s fantastic event and get people involved as much as possible, so the salute selfie is a great way to raise profile for the event and thank the armed forces at the same time.

“It’s incredibly exciting that we are already at the 50 day countdown mark, and I look forward to 24 June when Liverpool shows once again why it has such an outstanding reputation for staging large-scale outdoor events.”

A packed programme of events will take place in Liverpool to mark Armed Forces Day, with a parade march from St George’s Hall to Princes Parade, activities at the waterfront and a display beside the Cruise Liner passenger lounge among the highlights.

The full schedule will be announced next month.
