Caribbean restaurant Turtle Bay has applied for an alcohol licence, as it plans to open its first Liverpool venue in the Produce Exchange on Victoria Street.

The chain, which specialises in Caribbean dishes and cocktails, has undergone a period of expansion with restaurants in Manchester, Preston, Nottingham and Milton Keynes among its 13 UK restaurants. It is now targeting a Liverpool venue on the site of the Grade II-listed Produce Exchange, which has been vacant since NatWest bank closed in 2009.

Turtle Bay serves authentic Caribbean dishes based on the food found at restaurants, homes and in street cafes in the Caribbean islands including Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados. It also serves a range of Caribbean-inspired cocktails served from a beach bar and takeaway options from its menu.

The restaurant has applied to serve alcohol until midnight on Sunday to Wednesday and until 1pm on Thursday to Saturday, as well as an entertainment licence that would cover live or recorded music at the venue. If the application is successful, it will be the second new Caribbean eatery to arrive in the city this year, after popular Liverpool restaurant and take away Raggas opened a new venue on Bold Street.

A second application for a licence at the Produce Exchange has been made by Grillstock, a Bristol-based barbeque-style smokehouse chain that also hosts barbeque festivals in Bristol and Manchester.
