Liverpool ONE announces plans for new Liver Bird-themed play area at Chavasse Park

Liverpool ONE has announced plans for a new play area at Chavasse Park for families to enjoy and explore.

The new play area will be called ‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’, taking its name from the mythical Liver Bird symbol of the city, and will cover approximately 1,010 sq m.

A planning application has now been submitted, with work expected to start early 2027.

The new play space will include a number of features inspired by Liverpool’s heritage and waterfront, including:

  • A Liver Bird Tower with a tube slide
  • An elevated zipline with a launch tower
  • A Fishermen’s Village with trampolines
  • A castle-themed play structure with a slide
  • A School of Fish climbing structure
  • Tunnels and landscaped hills designed for exploration and play

The new space will provide a mix of play opportunities for children of different ages, abilities and backgrounds, with inclusive design embedded throughout. Guest feedback has also helped to shape and refine the overall concept.

Interactive and sensory play features will include communication tubes between towers to encourage social interaction, textured panels for exploration and discovery, and integrated musical elements. Additional features include busy boards, a rotating mirror and play boxes. A combination of elevated viewpoints and accessible ground-level experiences will allow children to explore the space in different ways.

A storytelling competition will also be delivered in collaboration with local schools to develop the narrative of the play area and its “journey from water to land”. Insights from the competition will help inform the continued development of the design.

Brendan Hattam, centre director at Liverpool ONE, says: “We’re excited to share plans for this major new play space at Chavasse Park, which will further strengthen Liverpool ONE’s family offering and create even more opportunities to spend quality time together outdoors.

“‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’ has been designed with local families in mind, encouraging fun-filled experiences inspired by a symbol that sits at the heart of the city’s identity.

“We’re proud to be investing in new family facilities that enhance our offering here and this play area will create a vibrant space for children of all ages to enjoy.”
