A new collage will be unveiled in Liverpool tomorrow (Tuesday 26 July) to celebrate the iconic Cavern Club’s 60th birthday.
Local artist Philip Hayes was commissioned to create the piece as part of a series of commemorative events ahead of the venue’s milestone anniversary in 2017.
Philip has previously worked on collages for the Cream nightclub, The Farm and Cast, and is also currently working with the Hillsborough campaign, local festivals, music venues and Unite the Union.
This latest work will take pride of place in the Cavern’s city centre office next to Matthew Street, where the world famous club began.
Having been commissioned by Cavern directors Bill Heckle and Dave Jones, Philip says: “I was delighted to be asked by Dave and Bill to produce the collage to celebrate the Club’s 60th Anniversary, it’s a great honour.
“I have used a variety of my own photographs, memorabilia and pictures from the Club’s archives.
“I have tried to the best of my ability to pay tribute to the venue, its pivotal and historical role and also to the many artists who have played at the Club since 1957”.
The Cavern, which started as a jazz club, has hosted performances by a wealth of musical stars including John Lennon’s skiffle group The Quarrymen and, famously, The Beatles.
