When La Senza closed its doors in Liverpool ONE it could have been a notable empty space in a shopping centre lauded across the country as one of the best of its kind. But the secret to Liverpool ONE’s success is creativity and optimism, and the former La Senza store is now home to another superb initiative that celebrates art and the city.
ONEart is a pop-up shop that gives retail space to the city’s best artists and it arrives as a unique concept. The 15 artists, carefully selected by the team behind the venture, will also be appearing in-store to create art works and have a chat with customers, giving a gallery feel to the store.
Of course, there are plenty of eye-catching displays to buy, with Liverpool landmarks such as the waterfront and cathedrals the main focus for many of the artists.
After visiting the store for the launch, it was fantastic to see artists that are invested in the city’s up-and-coming independent scene break in to the Liverpool ONE space. There are a number of favourites from the Rex Concept store here; Claire Ellis’ simply stunning dot art are some of my favourite local pieces at the moment. Based on aboriginal art, Claire recreates everything from the cathedrals and Sefton Park Palm House to wonderfully colourful geckos and swirling patterned pieces.
Katherine Caldwell’s whimsical animal print children and baby clothes, a favourite at Rex, is also here, as is Freida McKitrick, whose black and white Liverpool art – with the odd splash of colour – bring iconic Liverpool architecture to life.
There’s a treasure trove of other artists and items to browse, from photography to murals made from fabrics, and the store feels like a gallery, with much of the work propped up on easels or pallets. The friendly staff are mostly artists themselves, and are more than happy to have a chat and lend some expertise.
ONEart is not a permanent feature of Liverpool ONE but it is a welcome addition and a clever use of vacant space. Have a browse, chat to an artist and buy a print; it’s something clever, unique and not to be missed.
