Smithdown Road favourite The Tavern Co is heading Smithdown Road favourite The Tavern Co is heading to Liverpool city centre 🍳

The team behind the long-running independent venue will open Tavern Social at New Zealand House on Water Street this September, taking over the former Hooters site.

Known for its award-winning breakfasts and more than three decades on Smithdown Road, The Tavern Co’s new city centre venue will offer breakfast and brunch by day before shifting into a more social evening setting, with food, drinks and live sport part of the offer.

'McSwiggin’s - House of Stout', from Pub Invest Group, will open at 25 Fenwick Street, inside the Grade II-listed Castle Moat House, which has stood vacant for several years.

Built in 1841 on the site of Liverpool’s ancient castle moat, the landmark building has been restored and transformed into a two-floor Irish pub, with original features, live music, live sport and a focus on stout and whiskey. 

The opening is also expected to create new jobs across venue management and bar roles, while providing a regular platform for local musicians.

Following planning approval, Powerleague has confirmed an £850,000 extension to its Liverpool club, adding four new canopied padel courts alongside its existing 5 and 7-a-side football pitches.

The new courts are expected to be completed in November. 

Powerleague’s Liverpool site already welcomes around 1,600 players each week across its existing football pitches.

🏓✨ A major new padel, wellness and lifestyle 🏓✨ A major new padel, wellness and lifestyle destination is coming to Liverpool.

Club Mona, located on Great Howard Street near the Titanic Hotel, will span almost 40,000 sq ft, combining padel courts with fitness, recovery, wellness and social spaces.

The development will include indoor courts, a gym, studios for HIIT, yoga and Pilates, as well as recovery facilities such as saunas, ice baths and wider wellness treatments 🧘‍♂️❄️

Founded by brothers Luis, Lloyd and Jordan Stockton alongside Steven Granite of Applied Nutrition, the project is being developed as a multi-use space for sport, training, work and socialising.

Opening is expected by early 2027.
Commercial real estate advisor Avison Young and jo Commercial real estate advisor Avison Young and joint agents Area have been appointed to market the Lewis’s Building, one of Liverpool’s most historic Grade II-listed landmarks.

Situated on the corner of Ranelagh Street, the 320,195 sq ft building was opened in 1856 as Lewis’s, one of England’s first department stores, and has been partially redeveloped, with the remaining space offering "significant opportunity" for further development.

The building is currently occupied by the 126-bedroom Adagio aparthotel and PureGym, while a substantial amount of space remains vacant, including self-contained office facilities and large sections of the former Lewis’s store, offering scope for future uses including education, life sciences, hospitality, residential and student accommodation.

St Peter’s Tavern on Seel Street has won the ' St Peter’s Tavern on Seel Street has won the 'Conversion to Pub Use ' category in @campaignforrealale’s Pub Design Awards, for transforming a deconsecrated church into a thriving pub.
 
Formerly a Roman Catholic church built in 1788, owners 1936 Pubco described the conversion of St Peter’s as their greatest challenge to date.
 
The refurbishment involved opening up the spectacular galleried interior, restoring historic features and the original façade, and introducing a 20-metre-long bar counter crafted from recycled courthouse furniture. New pew seating, glazing and bespoke mirrors have been added, alongside the creation of a courtyard garden.
 
St Peter’s Tavern was named joint winner along with the Blue Stoops in Kensington, London.
Liverpool's 'Celebrating Summer' initiative gets u Liverpool's 'Celebrating Summer' initiative gets underway tomorrow (18 June), bringing a series of free weekly events designed to encourage people to get outdoors, explore the city and take part in a range of activities.

Organised and supported by Liverpool Business Improvement District, the programme runs until 27 August across locations including Bold Street, the waterfront, Hope Street, St George’s Quarter, Derby Square and the Commercial District.

It will feature live music, sport, food, games and wellbeing activities for workers, residents, visitors and families.

Highlights include:

• Chess events, including a grandmaster simul at Williamson Square (26 June) and coaching at Exchange Flags (28 June)

• A pop-up golf course at St Paul’s Square (6–10 July) ahead of The Open

• A rooftop sound bath at Tempest on Tithebarn (18 June, 12.15pm)

• Weekly Thursday pop-up play events with games, music and activities across the city centre

Other events will include street theatre, circus performances, live music, food giveaways and waterfront chill-out spaces across multiple locations.

The Celebrating Summer programme is funded and supported by Liverpool Business Improvement District.

'The Kingdom of the Liver Bird' takes its name from the mythical Liver Bird, Liverpool's iconic symbol, and will cover approximately 1,010 sq m.

The free-to-use play space will include a number of features inspired by Liverpool’s heritage and waterfront, including:

• A Liver Bird Tower with a tube slide

• An elevated zipline with a launch tower

• A Fishermen’s Village with trampolines

• A castle-themed play structure with a slide

• A School of Fish climbing structure

• Tunnels and landscaped hills designed for exploration and play

A planning application has now been submitted, with work expected to start early next year.
