Tate Liverpool’s Art Gym to flex public’s creative muscles

Tate Liverpool is teaming up with Turner Prize winners, Assemble, to help artists of all abilities and ages get creative.

Running for three weeks from 7 – 31 March, Tate Collective Liverpool, a youth art initiative, and Assemble will run free drop-in classes, lectures and workshops that embrace art, design, music and film to develop or learn new skills.

Following Assemble’s Turner Prize success for Granby Four Streets, Tate Collective has invited the multi-arts group to collaborate and co-design the gym-like environment with them which forms the heart of Art Gym and is custom-built to host classes, workshops and lectures.

Holly Bowers, Tate Collective member, says: “Tate Liverpool is throwing open its doors to people of all ages and abilities.

“We don’t want the public to think of the arts as an elitist community, anyone can enjoy it.

“It’s a New Year, so brush off the cobwebs and increase your art rate at Tate Liverpool’s Art Gym.”

A wide range of artists will host a series of free workshops in photography, critical writing, craft work and alternative life drawing while Tate Collective and the gallery’s visitor assistant team will act as Art Gym instructors, on hand to help guests plan their workout.

The programme forms part of Tate Liverpool’s spring season, ‘Make it Yours’, where the gallery aims to embrace new approaches and ideas.

Art Gym is part of Circuit, a project led by the Tate and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, which was co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and is part of the transnational Collaborative Arts Partnership Programme, with support from Liverpool City Council.
