Works by 60 artists will feature in Liverpool’s John Moores Painting Prize 2018 exhibition marking 60 years of the competition.
The longlisted paintings have been selected from more than 2,700 entries by an esteemed panel of jurors including the 2017 Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid MBE.
The free display at the Walker Art Gallery will be held from 14 July to 18 November, and forms part of this year’s Liverpool Biennial.
Artists Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Bruce McLean and Liu Xiaodong are also among the panel of jurors, alongside curator Jenni Lomax, and they’re judging paintings with artists’ names remaining anonymous throughout the process.
The newly announced longlist of paintings, which was revealed at Rathbones in London last night (24 April), will eventually be reduced to a shortlist of five finalists by the jurors.
The five will remain in the running for the top prize of £25,000, and four additional prizes of £2,500 will be awarded.
Visitors to the exhibition will also be invited to vote for their favourite entry to win the popular Visitors’ Choice Award, sponsored by Rathbones, with the winning artist receiving £2,018.
Those heading to the exhibition can expect to see paintings depicting a range of subjects, from Amazon parcel collection lockers to Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’, as well as diverse painting styles.
This year’s artists have experimented with materials including aluminium, silk, cardboard and even compostable food recycling bags are utilised in place of conventional canvases.
Sandra Penketh, director of art galleries at National Museums Liverpool, says: “The 2018 exhibition will be a particularly significant one. For 60 years, the Prize has enabled the Walker to showcase and acquire work by a truly remarkable selection of contemporary artists, and this year will be no exception.
“Self taught artists, art tutors, recent graduates and established artists are all represented, together providing a fascinating insight into what’s inspiring artists in the UK right now. Visitors will no doubt recognise the names of some talented past exhibitors, as well as discovering a host of exciting new names.”
