New affordable homes could be developed exclusively for ex-servicemen and women under plans for a Walton Road site.

Proposals have been put forward to transform the upper floors of two adjoining four-storey terraced buildings into eight studio apartments, as the property’s veteran owners look to assist others who have served in the armed forces.

The terraces are connected by a ground floor and basement level retail unit, which was operated by previous owners as a hair and beauty salon.

In a planning application submitted to Liverpool City Council a document by Burton Architects, which has designed the project, says: “The current owners purchased the building earlier this year with a view to operating the ground floor as a single retail unit, the basement as storage space supporting the retail unit and converting the upper two floors to studio apartment accommodation for military veterans, as the owners are veterans themselves and wish to assist others who have served in the armed forces in integrating back into civilian life by providing affordable accommodation with other like-minded individuals.”

If plans are given the go-ahead, the ground floor shop would be altered to allow residents to have access from the front of the building, and a rear single-storey extension would be demolished to make way for a new single storey providing residents’ access to communal staircases.

The planning document adds: “The scheme will provide much needed affordable accommodation, supported by Liverpool City Council’s Armed Forces Champion, to ex-servicemen and women in an area of Liverpool well served by public transport and other facilities helping them back into civilian life.

“The veterans will be referred to the accommodation and have their needs supported by the local veterans association.”
