Apartments planned for historic Gateacre manor house

A historic Gateacre manor house looks set to be transformed into new apartments.

Proposals to convert The Gorsey Cop on Grange Lane, which dates back over 150 years, include the demolition of a modern extension to the building.

The development, which has been recommended for the green light at a meeting of Liverpool City Council’s planning committee today (18 March), would see the conversion and extension of the main building, service wing and stables into 10 self-contained apartments.

The proposals also include the construction of three terrace properties in the former courtyard area and a further pair of semi-detached properties in the current car park.

First built sometime between 1850 and 1870, the building was originally home to Betsey Cunningham, the widow of a wealthy Manchester cotton broker.

The well-known South Liverpool building has gone through several uses throughout its long history including a period as a casino, a French restaurant and numerous pubs.

The Crying Tree public house was the last tenant of the building before calling it a day in 2014.

A planning report to be discussed by the committee notes that the plans have largely received the support of local residents – some of whom have objected the building’s use as a pub over the last 30 years – and adds that many are “delighted” at the potential change of use to residential and restoration of a listed property.
