Apartment plan for Mersey House on The Strand

Plans to transform Mersey House on The Stand into apartments are the ‘missing piece of the jigsaw’ for the area, according to an application to Liverpool City Council.

The ten-storey former office building, which is located next to the 30 James Street Hotel and faces Liverpool’s famous waterfront docks, is the subject of an application to reclad the outside of the building in order to convert the building into 122 apartments.

Under a scheme introduced by the government in 2013 to make use of vacant office buildings, the office can be converted into residential apartments without the need for planning permission. However, alterations to the exterior of the building would need to be approved by the city’s planning committee before work could get underway.

The proposal will use a modern structural-glass cladding system that will maximise floor-to-ceiling glass to make the most of views from Mersey House towards Albert Dock, the Three Graces and the River Mersey, according to the application.

Built in 1967, Mersey House was previously used by the Ministry of Defence but has been empty since it was vacated in 2007. The new application was submitted by Mersey House Ltd and the plans have been created by Halliday Meecham Architects (HMA), which says the property is often referred to as the missing piece of the area.
