City region votes as EU referendum results in Brexit

The Liverpool City Region has cast its votes, with Britain making the overall decision to leave the European Union.

The historic referendum, which has been followed by this morning’s announcement that Prime Minister David Cameron will resign, attracted 58.19% of Liverpool voters to opt to remain in the EU.

The city saw 64.03% of its electorate head out to polling stations to have their say, with 41.81% choosing the option to leave.

Elsewhere in the city region, St Helens attracted a 68% turnout at the polls, 58.02% of which were in favour of leaving; and 57.42% of Halton voters chose a Brexit outcome, with the area seeing 68.23% of its electorate vote.

Over in Wirral a majority 51.7% of voters wanted to remain in the EU, and the borough saw a 70.91% of voters turn out.

Meanwhile 63.52% of the Knowsley electorate voted in the referendum, with a 51.56% majority opting for Brexit; and Sefton saw 71.68% of its electorate vote, with 51.87% in favour of remaining.

For the residential property sector, experts are facing up to the “uncertainty” which could lie ahead.

David Orr, chief executive of the National Housing Federation which represents affordable housing in England, says: “We recognise the uncertainty that this result will bring to the sector and we are working with our housing association members to support them to continue delivering the homes and services this country needs.

“Whatever happens there is still a housing crisis and we remain committed to ending it.”

Meanwhile commercial property agent Bilfinger GVA has suggested following this morning’s results that greater UK control over immigration “could make it harder for overseas students to access UK universities, affecting the high-end student accommodation market” – an area of the sector which is currently prominent in the city.
