Plans to build two, four-storey apartment blocks on a vacant brownfield site close to Penny Lane have been recommended for approval by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee.
Proposals from Penny Lane Property Limited would see the overgrown Smithdown Road plot between Penny Lane Emporium and Pablinos Bar and Grill redeveloped.
The applicant seeks to erect two, four-storey residential blocks containing 34 two-bedroom apartments in total with both undercroft and surface level parking to accommodate 25 cars. The ground floor of the block fronting Smithdown Road would be used as a residents-only gym.
The adjacent pedestrian footpath, running between Smithdown Road and Penny Lane Shopping Centre, is also set to be improved as part of the plans.
A document included with the application submitted to the council reads: “The site has stood vacant for many years leaving a distinct gap in the urban frontage on Smithdown Road. It is now overgrown, underused and fenced in to effectively shut it off from the outside world.
“The proposal will seek to reinitiate this missing piece in an appropriate and respectful way so as not to detract from the established order of the street and bring this key site back into the fold of life on Smithdown Road.”
A report to the council’s virtual planning committee, which will meet on Wednesday 23 September, is recommending the plans be approved.
