Plans submitted to bring ‘key site back into the fold of life’ on Smithdown Road

Plans to build two, four-storey apartment blocks on a vacant brownfield site close to Penny Lane in South Liverpool have been revealed.

Penny Lane Property Limited has submitted proposals which could see the overgrown Smithdown Road plot between Penny Lane Emporium and Pablinos Bar and Grill redeveloped.

A total of 34, two-bedrooms apartments would be created as part of the scheme, which would also see the adjacent pedestrian footpath, running between Smithdown Road and Penny Lane Shopping Centre, improved.

In addition to the flats and car parking allocations, it’s envisaged that the ground floor will host communal bin stores, plant rooms and “generous gym space” for use by future residents.

A document included with the planning application submitted to Liverpool City Council reads: “The site has stood vacant for many years leaving a distinct gap in the urban frontage on Smithdown Road. It is now overgrown, underused and fenced in to effectively shut it off from the outside world.

“The proposal will seek to reinitiate this missing piece in an appropriate and respectful way so as not to detract from the established order of the street and bring this key site back into the fold of life on Smithdown Road.

“The proposed materials have been chosen to reflect the buildings surrounding the site and to compliment properties in the immediate vicinity.

“Each apartment type has been designed to facilitate a modern approach to living, with open plan kitchen and dining facilities along with the benefit of privacy in the bedrooms.”
