Merseyside will be celebrating World Book Day today (3 March) with various events taking place throughout the region.
Designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, World Book Day is a highlight of the literary calendar and the Liverpool area has a whole roster of events to mark the occasion.
The Write Blend in Waterloo, a new bookshop which boasts its own coffee shop serving bespoke coffee blends and fresh bakes, will be celebrating World Book Day this weekend. On Saturday (5 March), the book shop will welcome children’s author and illustrator Maxine Lee, who will be sharing her stories and signing copies of her books.
For more mature readers, St Helens Central Library will be hosting local poet Lynn Gerrard for an evening of poetry and humour tonight, forming part of the new Cultural Hubs Arts in Libraries programme.
Schools across Merseyside are getting involved too.
The Big Little Library in Belle Vale Shopping Centre, the award-winning community venture from Gateacre School, relaunched for 2016 yesterday in time for World Book Day.
The pop-up library is a place where people of all ages and different backgrounds can share their favourite stories for free. Opened by Gogglebox’s Leon and June, this year a Neighbourbook Watch scheme has been incorporated, where an appointed officer will deliver a book to your letterbox.
The Bookcase Theatre will be hosting a performance at The Liverpool Central Library for schools today, which will see the world and characters of The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland come to life in a fun, interactive performance.
The theatre company is made up of students from Liverpool John Moores University and aims to encourage young people to read by bringing literature to life through performance.
