First poppy to be planted at St George’s Hall

Tomorrow (3 November) will see the first of the iconic poppies planted at St George’s Hall as part of the Weeping Window display in the city.

The sculpture will be ready to view from 7 November as part of a UK-wide tour of the poppies from the installation, ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’, which was created to mark 100 years since the First World War and was first installed at the Tower of London last year.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson says : “People will start to see the creation of the Weeping Window outside St George’s Hall. It will be unveiled on Saturday 7 November and we’re expecting it will be extremely popular”

Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon will be on hand to plant the first poppy into the installation at 10:30am.

It has also been announced that as a complement to the arrival of the Poppies, a trail called Liverpool Remembers has been created which offers the public a suggested route around the city centre , giving them the chance to learn more about the horrors of the great war.

Created by Liverpool City Council in partnership with National Museums Liverpool, the trail is made up of over 20 different locations and directs people to memorials including the Liverpool Pals Memorial at Lime Street Station, the Unknown Soldier in Exchange Flags and the Maritime Memorials on the Pier Head.
