Headliners unveiled for 10th Sound City

The headliners for this year’s Sound City have been revealed.

Now in its 10th year, the UK’s biggest city based music festival will take place over four days in May at its new home of Clarence Dock.

The festival launches on Thursday (25 May) with The Human League topping the bill – support comes from Art of Noise and A Certain Ration.

On Friday (26 May) John Cale will take to the stage for his only European performance of The Velvet Underground & Nico album.

When announced last year tickets for the one-off gig sold out in two days, however Sound City has since announced there are a limited number of additional tickets to be released.

Star turn on Saturday (27 May) is Metronomy ably supported by The Kills, Slaves, Peaches, The Hunna, Carl Barat & The Jackals and many more.

Also taking place on Saturday will be a special keynote ‘In Conversation’ piece with John Cale.

Indie rockers The Kooks will look to provide the perfect finale for the extended weekend on Sunday (28 May).

Support comes from White Lies, Local Natives, Milburn, She Drew The Gun, Cabbage, The Sherlocks and Liverpool’s own The Vryll Society.

Dave Pichilingi, Sound City CEO, says: “For our big 10th birthday we wanted to do something really special, not just to mark to occasion but also to reward all those loyal ‘Sound Citizens’ who have come with us on every step of this amazing 10-year journey.

“The term legend is way over used these days but we really do have bona fide music legends on the bill every single day of the festival and we still have lots more to announce. It’s going to be a rollercoaster ride folks. Get yourself strapped in.”

Sound City forms part of ‘67-17: 50 Summers of Love’ – a programme which marks the historic summer of 1967 with more than 60 events taking place across the Liverpool City Region.

Running from 12 April until 3 September, the programme will also honour the 50th anniversaries of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, The Mersey Sound and the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The Solemn Jubilee Mass will take place on 4 June and alongside other events including Voices of The Metropolitan Cathedral, which will bring together members of the public to create a special listening trail of memories from the cathedral’s history, as well as a Flower Festival which will see the cathedral’s iconic interior transformed with floral displays.

Meanwhile, Bluecoat is working with the cathedral to present The Liverpool Mass – a tribute to the work of French composer Pierre Henry.

The French musique concrète composer was commissioned to create this electronic mass for the opening of the building in 1967 but did not complete it.

Now, 50 years on, it will be heard as a live mix during a unique performance at the cathedral using 40 speakers designed especially for the circular space.
