A final decision on whether a new apartment development will be built on the site of the former Childwall home of Carla Lane is to be made next week (31 January).

Liverpool City Council’s planning committee will travel to the 200-year-old Woolton Road cottage to conduct a site visit after plans were deferred at a previous planning meeting earlier this month.

The plans, which were recommended for approval at the original 10 January meeting, have encountered opposition from local residents, amenity groups and councillors due to the site’s historic interest.

The Childwall Resident’s Association has objected to the project on the grounds that it was once home to the writer of ‘The Liver Birds’ who died in 2016, arguing that the building should be listed to commemorate her.

Documents included in the application comment that the proposal seeks to make a “much improved use of the site” and to do so in a manner which is “in keeping with the adjacent and local buildings”.

If approved, the new development would border Our Lady’s Bishop Eton Primary School’s playground, the bowling greens at the rear of the Halfway House and the Sisters of Notre Dame Convent.

Following the visit to Maldon Lodge, the planning committee will reconvene at the Town Hall to make its final decision.
