Historic Royal Institution could welcome new restaurant

A new restaurant could open on Colquitt Street under plans to convert part of the historic Royal Institution building.

The ground floor of the Grade II-listed city centre site, part of a cluster of buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, is the subject of a planning application to change the space from an office.

If given the go ahead the building’s owner, TJ Thomas Estates, will market the space to operators who could add to the Ropewalks district’s array of existing bars, eateries and venues.

The building is already occupied by tiki bar Aloha in the basement, and the proposed restaurant would also be accessible via a courtyard leading onto the neighbouring Seel Street.

According to the plans, submitted to Liverpool City Council, the building within Duke Street Conservation Area would retain its period character as proposals will have “minimal impact on the building”.

A document submitted to the council says: “The proposed ground floor retail and leisure uses are considered appropriate to improve and assist in the animation and surveillance of Colquitt Street, thereby creating an attractive, well surveyed and inviting commercial space.”
