Afterhours arts festival LightNight will illuminate the city of Liverpool on 13 May with a programme than spans more than 100 free events for locals and visitors to enjoy.

This year’s extravaganza will include light shows, street entertainment, science demonstrations, workshops and live music, based around the theme of ‘Experiment’.

With so much going on and so little time to see it all, Your Move has picked out seven essential events from the festival to help you prepare for an evening of entertainment.

The Cage of Experiments, Bluecoat

Acrobatic parrots and a mass group waltz are among the highlights on offer at the Cage of Experiments over at the Bluecoat. A giant bird cage filled with visual and musical stimuli will take over the historic arts venue between 5pm and 10pm.

Liverpool Philharmonic Celebrates LightNight, Philharmonic Hall

Classical music venue the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is celebrating LightNight with a free concert between 7pm and 10pm, with Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and ensembles from the in-house orchestra performing a varied programme in the intimate setting of the building’s Music Room.

Evening of Film and Music, Liverpool John Moores University

JMU is marking the festival with an evening of short films and music, culminating in a free screening of the feature-length centrepiece Violet City, which is set in a fantasy-themed version of Liverpool. The event takes place at the Redmonds Building between 5pm and 10pm.

Shush! Silent Disco, Liverpool Central Library

The organisers of underground techno party Stak have teamed up with Shush Silent Disco to bring the quietest rave you’ll ever attend to Liverpool Central Library. Attendees will dance away wearing headphones in the Picton Reading Room, located on the second floor, between 8pm and 11.30pm.

Music for Empty Spaces : In Situ

Meet on the steps of the Metropolitan Cathedral at 9pm for a walking tour of Liverpool’s streets backed by live music. The soundtrack for the evening will be provided by local songsmiths including Jo Bywater and Dan Wilson.

No Worst, There Is None, Liverpool Cathedral

Inspired by the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem of the same name, No Worst, There Is None is a large-scale collaborative artwork that combines immersive light and AV effects with a sweeping orchestral arrangement by Bill Ryder-Jones. It will take place at Liverpool Cathedral between 9pm and 10pm.

LateNight After Party, Constellations

Keep the festivities going into the wee hours at the LateNight After Party hosted by Baltic Triangle venue Constellations between 10pm and 2.30am. Artist Sam Wiehl will provide light projects against a soundtrack spanning everything from hip-hop to techno.
