Liverpool buses given makeover for Biennial

Three Liverpool buses will become travelling art exhibits thanks to a collaboration between Arriva and the Liverpool Biennial.

The double-deckers will be given a creative makeover by international artists and local schoolchildren, bearing unique designs as they travel along their routes.

The designer buses will take to roads in North and South Liverpool as well as the Wirral throughout the 2016 Biennial – which runs between 9 July and 16 October – and beyond.

Hitting the road in early June, the first bus will be designed by year seven pupils from Childwall Sports & Science Academy with artists and designers Hato. It has been dubbed the ‘space bus’ and will be adorned with a galactic theme.

The other two Arriva double-deckers, set to launch in early July, will be designed by Portuguese artist Ana Jotta and Liverpool-based artist Frances Disley.

Sally Tallant, director of Liverpool Biennial, says: “We are delighted to partner with Arriva on such a significant project for Liverpool. After the success of Sir Peter Blake’s commission for the Mersey Ferry, this is an excellent opportunity for artists to collaborate with transport providers and take art to the streets, making connections across the city.”
