Philharmonic Hall to screen cult films with orchestra

A trio of cult movies will be screened with a live orchestra at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall as part of the venue’s 2017/18 programme.

The new season gets underway in September with Classic FM’s 25th anniversary concert presented by former BBC Breakfast host Bill Turnbull.

The 2017/18 programme, which will be the 12th under the baton of chief conductor Vasily Petrenko and the orchestra’s 177th season since its founding in 1840, is based around two major themes – ‘From the New World’ and ‘The Art of the Piano’.

The former features music by American composers, as well as European composers influenced by America or who emigrated there to save their personal and creative existence.

The latter explores the huge range of musical styles inspired by the world’s favourite instrument, played by some of the most prominent artists of our day.

The 80th birthday of renowned composer Philip Glass is celebrated with the UK premiere of his Eleventh Symphony in a concert that includes Dvořák’s American Suite, and a rare performance of Scriabin’s Second Symphony.

Following on from last year’s popular screening of ‘Home Alone’, cult movies ‘Casablanca’, ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Vertigo’ will later this year be given the orchestral treatment.

Fans of Dr. Emmett Brown and Marty McFly are in for a particular treat with approximately 20 minutes of brand new music added by award-winning composer Silvestri to the film’s score especially for the live orchestra presentations.
