The second annual Student Excellence Awards took place at the historic Liverpool Medical Institution on Tuesday (7 February).
During the event, hosted by The Pandemic Institute, seven students working in the areas of infection or diagnostics were each presented with £5,000 by Liverpool-based medical diagnostic firm DAM Health.
The grants allow students to further their research by attending international conferences or enrol on world-leading training and development courses.
Some of the projects undertaken by the winning students included research into effective treatment against mosquito-transmitted viruses, nanopore technologies, pneumococcus disease, and the rise in stair falls during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The students, who study at the University of Liverpool, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine or Liverpool John Moores University, were presented with their awards by Professor Frank Joseph, founder of DAM Health.
Liverpool Labour MP Ian Byrne also hosted a virtual speech at the Student Excellence Awards, insisting each winner “has done the city proud”.
Professor Frank Joseph says: “We are proud to partner, for the second consecutive year, with The Pandemic Institute for the Student Excellence Awards.
“It is a real honour to support some of the most brilliant minds in scientific and medical research with funding.
“All of the student winners are incredibly deserving and, I believe, can become key figures in the fight against potential future pandemics and wider medical diagnostics.
“It was fantastic to be part of the ceremony and to join Dr Ray Kent from The Pandemic Institute and Ian Byrne MP to make these presentations.”
Ian Byrne, Labour MP for Liverpool, West Derby, adds: “I’d like to personally congratulate each student receiving a Student Excellence Award.
“The students really do represent the best in education and research in Liverpool and I am delighted that this initiative exists in the city as a Labour MP who believes so much in education. Each award winner has done the city proud.”
The Student Excellence Award winners were Caitlin Greenland Bews, Caitlin Thompson, Emily Wharton, Konstantinos Liatsikos, Neelam Iqbal, Rosheen Mthawanji and Mercy Terer.
