A new drive-in cinema is set to open at Liverpool’s Clarence Dock to replace Route 66.

‘Big Ed’s’ will occupy the same site as its predecessor but is being touted as an all-new cinema which offers a “more personal” experience.

The drive-in will host special themed evenings which include live music and actors in costumes to tie in with the main feature, alongside its standard programming. American-themed food and drink will also be served at an on-site burger bar.

Big Ed’s co-owner Lee Seddon tells Your Move: “Big Ed’s is going to be a fresh start and a new cinema with a different setup and concept. It’s going to be a lot more personal, move of a novel idea. We’re hoping to construct a stage in front of the screen so we can have acts on before special themed screenings.

“One of the ideas were considering is a Halloween evening with scary movies showing and actors going around the cars. It will be more of a 4D experience than what Route 66 offered.”

Lee, who was part of Route 66 before the company ceased trading, says Big Ed’s will show a diverse range of movies, from old classics to independent films and contemporary blockbusters.

He adds: “We’re going to show a broad range of movies, from older classics to the mainstream new movies but the cinema will offer a quirkier experience than your standard multiplex. We’re not going to be open seven nights a week because I felt that diluted the business. We’re looking at Wednesday through to Sunday.”

Big Ed’s is expected to open to the public on 1 August, subject to securing licensing and planning permission.
