Nineteen new apprentices are to be employed by Redrow in the region this year and could work on developments in and around Liverpool.
The new recruits, who will be appointed by the housebuilder’s Lancashire and North West businesses, will form part of a record 100 trade apprentices set to be taken on across the whole national firm.
The annual apprentice recruitment drive by Redrow has been announced to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week, which is currently underway until 18 March.
Faye Whiteoak, development director for Redrow in Liverpool, says: “We anticipate that several of these apprentices will be from the Merseyside area and working on some of Redrow’s Liverpool Housing Partnership projects.”
Representatives from the firm will be visiting schools and colleges across the country to talk to young people about the value of trade apprenticeships as a route into the construction industry.
Joe Joyce, a Redrow apprentice in Liverpool who is already realising the benefits of the career path having joined in summer 2014 following a year of sixth form at Enterprise South Liverpool Academy, says: “I love that I am learning something new every day and I love doing things for myself and the sense of achievement that brings. It’s also great to earn money which allows me to enjoy life outside work with my family and friends.
“To anyone thinking of applying for an apprenticeship I’d say ‘do it’. It’s a way of easing into work and learning new skills with fantastic support from Redrow.”
Joe attends St Helens College one day a week and the rest of the working week is practising his joinery skills at Knights Park, Woolton, where Redrow is building 21 family homes as part of the Liverpool Housing Partnership.
He is among the trainees which currently make up around 15% of Redrow’s direct employees.
