South Liverpool police and fire station sale to raise over £1 million

The sale of a South Liverpool police station, and a nearby fire station, is set to raise over £1 million, it has been announced.

More than 200 expressions of interest were received for the 0.96-acre plot in Allerton.

The site comprises Allerton Police Station and the Allerton Community Fire Station on Mather Avenue – famously referenced by The Beatles on ‘Penny Lane’

Following what’s been described as a “detailed evaluation” of 24 formal offers in partnership with the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority (MFRA), Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) confirmed the land has been sold to housing association Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH).

LMH says it’s delighted to have acquired the site and plans to create “much-needed affordable homes” whilst preserving the original landmark buildings.

Plans currently being developed would see the police and fire station converted to host 36 affordable rent apartments for over 55s.

Behind the fire station, seven family homes will be built for Shared Ownership, a tenure designed to help people take their first step onto the property ladder.

The fire station on Mather Avenue is famously mentioned in The Beatles song ‘Penny Lane’.

Further consultation with local residents will take place before a submission for planning permission is made later this year.

Chris Bowen, managing director at LMH Developments, says: “We are committed to building and delivering high quality developments that meet housing demand in local communities. The Allerton Police Station and Community Fire Station site is an exciting opportunity to deliver much-needed homes for older people and those looking to buy their first property.

“The scheme will retain the historic value of these important buildings in Liverpool.”
