Liverpool is to be one of the main stopovers in an ambitious national sailing challenge launched by Dame Ellen MacArthur.

Round Britain 2017, which will see 100 young people in recovery from cancer take on a relay around the UK, was announced this week and organisers have confirmed it is heading to the city.

Run by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which helps eight to 24-year-olds rebuild their confidence after cancer through water-based adventures, the voyage will take place from May to September visiting UK towns and ports along the way.

During the stopovers the crew will take part in events and activities and will also look to visit local cancer treatment centres to meet people still undergoing treatment and help them focus on some positive options for their futures.

According to organisers, members of the community will be invited to be a part of the adventure.

Ahead of Round Britain 2017 and its visit to Liverpool, Dame Ellen MacArthur says: “Everyone can become part of this story by welcoming the crew when they visit your home port.

“These local welcomes, wherever you are in the UK, will be a huge part of this experience. We would love everyone to be part of the adventure and get involved.”
