Liverpool-based Marshall Construction has completed a specialist refurbishment project at Knowsley Central School, creating new soft-play, sensory and accessible facilities for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

The £468,000 scheme has brought previously vacant and underused areas of the Huyton school back into use. The work includes a sea-themed soft-play area, a flexible sensory room with specialist lighting, improved circulation spaces, accessible toilet and changing facilities, and new ramped access.

The project also involved extensive structural alterations, roofing works, mechanical and electrical upgrades, fire-safety interfaces, internal refurbishment and external improvements.

Marshall Construction worked closely with Knowsley Council, Knowsley Central School and its specialist supply-chain partners to coordinate the project and ensure the new facilities were ready for pupils returning to school.

The existing accommodation required extensive opening-up, structural alterations and complete refurbishment before the specialist facilities could be installed. Seeing the space transformed into such a vibrant and inclusive environment has been incredibly rewarding.

“We are particularly proud to have completed the project successfully and in time for pupils returning to school. This was our first major contract delivered for Knowsley Council, and we would like to thank the council’s project team, Knowsley Central School, our site team and all the specialist subcontractors and suppliers who contributed to its successful delivery.”

The soft-play installation provides pupils with a colourful and engaging space for recreation and development, while the adjoining sensory room offers a calmer and more adaptable environment. Accessible facilities were incorporated throughout the scheme, including specialist changing accommodation, accessible toilets, improved circulation and ramped access for pupils with mobility requirements.
