Scores of new homes were given the green light at Liverpool City Council’s latest planning meeting.

Among the approved developments is a residential scheme near the Royal Liverpool Hospital comprising 1,007 student flats and 142 apartments for “key workers”.

The £100 million project, which will stand at 14 storeys tall and will also include an on-site bar, gym and study areas, is to be built by Elliot Group on the corner of Erskine Street and Low Hill.

Elliot Lawless of Elliot Group, says: “We’ve worked very hard with the city council to craft a scheme that sits well within its spatial context and brings activity and animation to a key gateway site.

“The launch of Paddington Village and its early success demonstrate that there will be additional demand for student homes and key worker accommodation as the Knowledge Quarter grows and our objective is to appeal to the more discerning residents with our focus on high quality amenities and design.”

The council has also rubber stamped controversial plans to demolish Maldon Lodge in Childwall  – a former home of ‘Liver Birds’ script writer Carla Lane – and replace it with 24 apartments.

The scheme was approved after being deferred for a site visit, despite objections led by heritage campaigners and four councillors.

Meanwhile, the local authority’s planning committee has given developer Azure Horizons the go-ahead to build 312 new apartments on land at Vauxhall Road in Kirkdale after carrying out demolition work at the site.

Outside of the residential space, the Kazimir was given permission to continue operating its Invisible Wind Factory venue having secured a permanent space on Regent Road.
