Plans to convert the former HSBC bank building in the Hardman Street area in to a specialist whisky bar have been approved.

The bar will be based on the corner of Rodney Street and Leece Street and will have an outside terrace in a yard to the rear of the building. Meanwhile, upper floors of the building will be converted into six apartments, according to the application.

Plans for the 1,700 sq ft bar state ‘the aspiration is to bring this prominent but derelict listed building back into active use’. Under the plans the HSBC signs will be removed and the interior redesigned to suit a bar and restaurant with fireplaces, a library area and booth seating installed. The plans also include a new timber door for the Rodney Street entrance to the bar.

Plans show the first floor of the building will house three apartments and the second floor a further two, with another roof space apartment also included in the plans. The basement of the building will be used as an office, storage room and cellar for the bar.
