Plans to build a new Aldi in Speke have been recommended for approval by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee – despite objections from ASDA & Morrisons.

Morrisons argued that the new Aldi, which would be located on the site of a former tea factory on Speke Hall Road, would “affect the viability” of its Speke store, whilst ASDA’s objections covered several technical matters including highway concerns.

However, a document recommending the council’s planning committee approve Aldi’s proposals says the impact of the new store on Speke’s retail offering would not be “significantly adverse”, and notes that any highway issues relating to the development have been addressed by the applicant.

The new 14,337 sq ft Aldi store, and 138 car parking spaces, would occupy the southern half of the 2.4–hectare South Liverpool site, with an employment unit positioned to the north of the supermarket.

Aldi’s planning application, which will be debated next Tuesday (17 August), also includes outline proposals for a drive-through restaurant and an eight-pump petrol filling station, with associated retail facilities.

Aldi, which operates more than 7,000 stores across Europe, North America, and Australia, says it has come up with a “bespoke design” for a “key gateway site into Liverpool”, which includes a tower feature in metallic silver cladding – “creating prominence to the site and a focal point for customers”.

The supermarket chain adds that the new food store will “provide a modern shopping environment, offering a quality design and a crisp, clean look to the building”.
