American burger chain Wendy’s plans new Speke drive-thru

The world’s third largest burger chain could be opening a new drive-thru in Liverpool.

A planning application recently submitted to Liverpool City Council by applicant A&F Forecourts is seeking permission to build a new drive-thru operated by Wendy’s and a petrol filling station in Speke.

The 1.2-acre site, located on Speke Hall Road opposite Screwfix and Halfords Autocentre, is currently a vacant, brownfield plot, having been cleared as part of the wider Tea Factory development which includes an Aldi supermarket.

Known for its square beef patties and signature Frosty desserts, Wendy’s re-entered the UK market in 2021 and now has more than 30 locations across the country, including a drive-thru at Kirkby’s Academy Business Park which opened last summer.

Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, USA, in November 1969. After considering the names of all five of his children for the restaurant, Thomas ultimately chose his daughter Melinda’s nickname, Wendy. This nickname originated because her siblings had difficulty pronouncing her name, calling her ‘Wenda’, which eventually became ‘Wendy’.

Thomas envisioned Wendy’s as a place where customers could enjoy hamburgers “the way you used to get them”. The famous logo – a smiling little girl – was paired with the name ‘Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers’ to evoke a sense of nostalgia and quality. The original menu featured ‘hot and juicy hamburgers’, ‘rich and meaty chilli’, French fries, soft drinks, and the Frosty dairy dessert.
