The Alchemist
With mixed drinks served in chemistry beakers or fresh off the Bunson burner, The Alchemist is part cocktail bar, part luxurious science lab. The Brunswick Street establishment is the home of unique mixological creations, including the nostalgic Screwball and the dry ice-billowing Lightbulb Moment.
Trattoria 51
Inside an impressive Victorian building in the commercial district, the Italian restaurant and bar is a firm favourite for after work drinks. The new Prosecco menu is especially devised for the warmer months in mind, offering a luxury twist to summer cocktails in true Italian style. The menu includes a range of sweet and refreshing blends including Apple Bellini, Cosmopolitan Prosecco, Strawberry Rossini, and a classic Bellini.
Aloha
A student-friendly basement bar modelled on an island oasis away from the city’s gastro pubs and hardcore dance venues. The Tiki bar reaches out to Hawaiian and Polynesian culture so expect rum-based drinks aplenty served in all manner of vessels including whole pineapples, volcanoes and (mock) elephant heads.
Modo
Concert Square’s original cocktail bar, Modo offers everything from intimate booths to raucous DJ sets in the stylish basement club. Check out the cocktail menu for a huge selection of drinks provided by the bar’s mixologists – making this a perfect beginning to a night out at Liverpool’s famous club scene. Or stay to party late into the night at this long-running venue.
Panoramic 34
If you want to get dressed up and enjoy a cocktail in a glamorous setting take a trip into the sky to Panoramic 34. The number refers to the restaurant and bar’s floor number in the spectacular Beetham Tower, Liverpool’s tallest waterfront building. There’s an extensive cocktail menu offering fairly standard options, but all taste senses will be heightened by the luxury surroundings and spectacular views on offer.
Smuggler’s Cove
The Blue Bar and Grill and Revolution offer cocktail options in the upmarket Albert Dock area so there’s no shortage of choice. Smuggler’s Cove can also be added to the mix after opening its doors in 2013. The pirate-themed bar has an extensive rum menu, an exquisite smuggler-themed fit-out and a sense of fun that should be required for any night of cocktail tasting. Step outside for some spectacular views of the waterfront and Albert Dock.
El Bandito
A tequila bar tucked away in the basement of Santa Chupito, and promising to revamp your opinion of the much-maligned drink. Serving delicate tequila cocktails in the atmospheric bar, El Bandito is a brick-walled, candle-lit haven from the city centre and a masterclass in creating something delicious from the fiery spirit.
Some Place
You won’t find signposts pointing the way to the secretive Some Place. The absinthe cocktail bar simply wants you chase the fairy and follow the single green lamp over the Ropewalks doorway. At the top of the steps you’ll find expert bar tenders on hand to teach you the ways of absinthe. Owned by the team behind the excellent Berry and Rye, Some Place is another hidden treasure in the Ropewalks district.
Maya
Hidden beneath Mexican street food restaurant Lucha Libre on Wood Street, Maya is a basement late night cocktail bar serving tequila and other tipples in an atmospheric and intimate setting. Not for the feint hearted, the bar celebrates the intriguing culture behind Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead celebrations, for a unique take on a cocktail experience.
Tavern on the Green
An unassuming pub with a striking design – the angles of the decking point towards the city’s cathedrals – this Chavasse Park venue is popular with after work drinkers looking for real ales. However, the leather-lined bar also offers a range in cocktails that are lovingly hand-made to order. From mojitos to seasonal creations, Tavern on the Green delivers affordable cocktails in a relaxed setting – so there’s no need to throw on that cocktail dress.
Fazenda
Famed for its Brazilian ‘rodizio’ style continuous tableside service of prime cuts of meat – Fazenda also boasts an impressive cocktails list. From Brazil’s national cocktail the Caipirinha to the indulgent Brazilian Wine Cooler which mixes Velho Barreiro cachaça and Appleton Estate rum with fresh lime, Velvet Falernum, pineapple juice and guava – you’re sure to find something to suit your taste here.
