Best for… Irish pubs

As the famous saying goes, ‘a pint of plain is your only man’ and with St Patrick’s Day less than two weeks away it’s about time you started planning where you’ll be sampling a glass of porter or two this year. Take your pick from our top three ‘proper’ Irish pubs on 17 March. Sláinte!

A drop of the pure

Pogue Mahone, Seel Street , L1

Very popular with the city’s student population, Pogue’s screens a wide array of live sports events including GAA, football and rugby. Add into the mix roaring fires, hearty grub and regular live music and it’s not hard to see why you’ll struggle to find a seat at the bar come 17 March.

Rare old mountain dew

Shenanigans, Tithebarn Street, L2

Tucked away on Tithebarn Street, you would be forgiven for missing this quirky Irish pub on your travels but it’s certainly one establishment worth tracking down. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in spirit. You can always find a warm welcome here, along with a cracking pint of Guinness.

Streams of whiskey

The Liffey Bar, Renshaw Street, L1

Which of Liverpool’s Irish pubs serves up the best pint of Guinness is a hotly debated subject but The Liffey Bar on Renshaw Street can certainly lay a strong claim to the title. A jar of its beautiful black stuff will set you back less than £3 and with a friendly atmosphere and regular live music this is one alehouse you can’t afford to miss.
