Gallery: ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’ pub demolished

The Liverpool pub which featured in the TV show ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’ has been knocked down to make way for new flats.

Demolition company McVey Bros paid homage to the Green Man’s role in the BBC drama by hanging a commemorative sign on the building before it was raised.

The sign read “Shake hands was here, 1982” in reference to a famous scene in the final episode of ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’ in which Bernard Hill’s Yosser Hughes character headbutts a man who has been forcing him to shake his hand.

The Vauxhall Road drinking establishment will be replaced by a four-storey residential development housing 12 flats, which has already been given the green light by Liverpool City Council.

The proposals to redevelop the site were approved despite objections to the scheme from local residents, some of whom expressed concerts about the potential loss of green space behind the former pub.

Written by Liverpudlian playwright Alan Bleasdale, ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’ originally aired in 1982, running for five episodes.

The show follows five unemployed men in Liverpool and was lauded for its powerful social commentary.
