Call for Liverpool to join in new Pirates and Mermaids Parade

Wannabe pirates and mermaids of all ages across Liverpool are being called to don their most spectacular costumes for a new parade in the city.

Community groups and companies to creative individuals are being encouraged to take part in the inaugural Pirates and Mermaids Parade when it’s held as part of the annual Pirate Festival on the Dock.

The free swashbuckling 10-11 September event at Albert Dock will feature the exciting new addition alongside its usual helping of thrilling live action and local folklore.

Inspired by America’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Liverpool’s version will follow a route around The Strand and back into Albert Dock, featuring the cast of pirates, drummers and members of public in their best costumes.

Starting at 12.30pm from Hartley Quay on Saturday 10 September, it’ll be led by the Mermaid of Black Rock who, according to legend, appeared off the coast of North Wirral.

Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed group and individual joining in.

Claire Rawlinson, marketing manager at Albert Dock Liverpool, says: “We are thrilled to announce this exciting new element to this year’s Pirate Festival on the Dock – and we encourage people of all ages to come dressed in their finest pirate and mermaid attire and join in what promises to be a visual treat.

“Community groups are invited to take part in the parade – be it the local Cadets, Girl Guides and Scouts groups, companies looking for a bit of team bonding with a difference, fashion and performing arts students, charities, and simply those who love to dress up and have fun.

“We want to evoke a carnival spirit at Albert Dock as we celebrate the city’s rich and fascinating maritime history.”

Groups wanting to take part should contact programming@fitthebill.com and individuals can join in on the day.
