Community groups could help put St Johns Market ‘back on the map’

Community groups, schools and colleges could help play a part in putting Liverpool’s St Johns Market “back on the map,” according to its new manager.

Colin McCrory has recently taken the helm at the new-look indoor market having spent the past 25 years running shopping centres, and says there are “opportunities galore” to help it thrive.

The market reopened last November following a £2.5 million refurbishment, and is said to be drawing in new operators.

According to Liverpool City Council, which took over control of all the city’s market operations by buying out Geraud UK for £1, says 100% of the hair and beauty section is now let and three new food operators are due to open in the food court over the next two weeks making it 80% occupied.

The local authority is also actively seeking new traders of food such as cheese and dairy produce as well as newsagents, dancewear, toys and fancy dress and electrical goods.

Colin says: “Market halls are regaining their popularity with shoppers and I want to ensure Liverpool has an indoor market the people can be proud of and want to use daily for all their shopping needs.

“The main challenges are to attract new traders to the market to compliment the current traders and to increase footfall by attracting the old and new customers.

“It’s an exciting time because there are opportunities galore be it working with start-up businesses, community groups and schools and colleges to promote their work, all of which will help put St Johns Market back on the map.’’
