‘I was coming back to get it later’: Council’s ‘anti-litter squad’ reveals top excuses

A new report has revealed an interesting list of excuses from members of the public caught dropping litter in the city.

Since 1 March, 14 members of the so-called ‘anti-litter squad’ have been working throughout Liverpool to tackle littering and dog fouling – serving over 2,500 £80 fixed penalty notices (FPN’s).

The enforcement pilot, which has been conducted in joint partnership between Liverpool City Council and private firm Kingdom, is designed to “effect the behavioural change required to support a sustainable improvement in local environmental quality throughout the city” and was run alongside education activities with communities, schools and other organisations.

The council says keeping the city’s streets clean and safe is key to attracting more tourists and also “fundamental” in supporting private sector investment in regenerating Liverpool.

At a meeting of the council’s cabinet last week, the green light was given for the local authority to procure a permanent contract for the continued delivery of the anti-litter squad.

Meanwhile, a report to be discussed by the Neighbourhood Select Committee today (4 April), has revealed some of the more interesting excuses given by those caught littering since 1 March.

  1. I was resting it underneath my foot (cigarette end)

  2. Because the council don’t clean up the leaves

  3. I brush outside the shop every Friday so I shouldn’t be getting fined

  4. I thought it was only the Wirral that you couldn’t drop litter

  5. It’s raining so I didn’t want to walk to the bin

  6. Everyone else does it

  7. I’m keeping the litter picker in a job

  8. Throwing a cig on the floor isn’t littering if I smoked ¾ of it

  9. I’m not from around here, it’s not illegal where I’m from

  10. I was coming back to get that later

  11. My boss said I was allowed to throw it here

  12. I’m addicted to smoking so I can’t stop throwing them on the floor
