Children can learn how to make robots this weekend as Liverpool cultural attractions join forces to host a free event.

Plants & Robots will take place at Victoria Street’s Liverpool Small Cinema from 1-4pm on Sunday (24 January) teaching young visitors to make plant watering robots with Raspberry Pi computers and electronic units that turn plants into musical instruments.

The workshop, which will also feature a screening of sci-fi classic ‘Silent Running’, brings together activities from FACT’s Plants & Robots schools programme with artist Laura Pullig’s Plants as Performers residency at METAL.

Sam Meech, director of the creative community interest company Re-Dock and founder of the Liverpool Small Cinema, says: “It’s great that we are starting to see the Small Cinema used as a space for family workshops. Not many cinemas teach kids how to make robots before they go and watch a sci-fi film.”

The Plants & Robots programme has already seen FACT and Re-Dock artist Neil Winterburn work with Year 5 primary school children across St Helens.

Meanwhile Laura Pullig has been working with musician Adam Cooper to create analog electronic instruments which can be attached to and played by touching plants.
