Blur frontman Damon Albarn is to take part in a “unique” Liverpool performance to celebrate St George’s Day.
Art project The Rapid Response Unit (RRU) has commissioned the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians to formulate a “musical expression” for the national feast day next month.
Taking place at the Philharmonic Hall on 23 April, the orchestra will be joined on stage the Britpop star and Tunisian artist Mounir Troudi.
As part of the commission the orchestra will also undertake a rehearsal residency in Liverpool, prior to the St George’s Day performance.
Mark Donne, bureau editor of RRU, says: “St George is of course the symbol of English nationalism, but he was also an immigrant, and remains the patron saint of England, Bulgaria, Palestine, Ethiopia, Greece and Lithuania.
“On the 23 April this truly multi-cultural city will come together in an unforgettable celebration of art, music and unity; of that I’ve absolutely no doubt.”
Michael Eakin, chief executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, adds: “Liverpool Philharmonic is honoured to be welcoming the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians, Damon Albarn and Mounir Troudi to perform on St George’s Day.
“It is a perfect fit with our mission which is all about the power of music to transform lives, and to connect across cultural boundaries, and we are looking forward to a memorable night.”
Tickets for the performance will go on sale at 10am on 4 April from the Philharmonic’s website.
The RRU says it will be working with local authorities and charities to bring together an audience which reflects the “diverse communities of modern Britain” by ensuring a number of free tickets are made available for the event.
