French sporting goods retailer Decathlon plans new Church Street store

Decathlon, the French sporting goods retailer, looks set to open in the former Next store on Liverpool’s Church Street.

The company, which operates more than 2,000 outlets around the world (including one inside ASDA in Huyton), has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council detailing its new signage for the store.

Next, which vacated the six-storey building during lockdown, has relocated to the former Century 21 store on the corner of Church Street and Whitechapel. It’s understood Decathlon will only occupy the ground floor.

Property management company The Momentum Group has been appointed by real estate investment managers, Redevco, to deliver a “transformational programme of works” at 18-20 Church Street in an effort to “enhance its attraction to a wider range of potential occupiers”.

Property owners, Redevco, invited tenders from a number of contractors earlier this year. The contract was awarded to The Momentum Group due to its experience in “maximising value” in city centre retail premises.

Speaking for Redevco, portfolio director, Andrew Foulds, says: ‘We received a number of high-quality tenders for this project but felt The Momentum Group offered the best all round service and value for money to meet our requirements.

“It is really useful to have a respected local Liverpool team working on the ground, with local knowledge in the city centre retail sector.’

Chris Renshaw, co-founder and director at The Momentum Group, adds: ‘We are delighted and thrilled to be working with Redevco.

“It is our first project with them and a great opportunity to showcase our services, providing the very best experience for our client, and helping to create an exciting new development in one of the most prominent buildings in the city centre.’
